On 7 November 2025, Ocean Network Express (ONE)'s Alternative Marine Power (AMP) made its debut at YANTIAN and was officially brought into operation. The system provides berthed vessels with flexible, efficient clean electricity, markedly improving shore-power utilisation and reducing carbon emissions, injecting new momentum into the shipping industry's low-carbon transition.
Collective effort, shared commitment: Advancing the green development together
At the launch ceremony, representatives from the Transport Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality, the Yantian Exit & Entry Frontier Inspection Station, the Yantian Maritime Safety Administration, ONE, and shipping agencies gathered at YANTIAN to witness this significant milestone in green shipping collaboration. During the event, Kennedy Li, Director of ONE Hong Kong and South China, explained the AMP system's technical advantages in detail and demonstrated its full operating procedures, giving participants a clear and intuitive understanding of its convenience.

In his address, Lawrence Shum, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports YANTIAN, remarked, "Green ports lie at the heart of the industry's future, and innovation is the engine that drives YANTIAN forward. We continue to invest in smart and digital technologies to optimise processes, enhance supply-chain resilience, and deliver a more intelligent and agile service experience for our customers. Our exploration of the 'plug-and-play' model, in partnership with ONE, is yet another step in turning our shared green vision into practical reality."

Deepening collaboration and advancing green innovation: Answering the national call
As the world moves towards low-carbon development, shore-power technology has become essential to reducing emissions from berthed vessels. Yet traditional shore-power installations often suffer from deployment limitations. The AMP offers a practical solution: highly flexible and "plug-and-play", it can provide efficient electrical connection to a wide range of vessels at berth directly. This not only helps shipping companies lower operating costs but also greatly increases shore-power utilisation during port stays, cutting carbon emissions and noise from diesel generators at the source.

This innovation represents both a technological upgrade for the port and shipping sector and a vivid demonstration of YANTIAN's commitment to the Shenzhen Comprehensive Reform Pilot, which encourages deeper exploration in areas such as custom clearance. In YANTIAN, as a "pilot ground for reform", close and sustained collaboration across the port and shipping industry is ensuring that green technologies are not only adopted, but effectively applied, providing replicable experience for low-carbon transition.
As Shenzhen—China's leading international-trade city—prepares to host the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, YANTIAN, a crucial gateway for the Greater Bay Area and an important window into China's enduring commitment to win-win openness, will continue to strengthen its role as a hub that enables connectivity across domestic and international markets. YANTIAN will further deepen feeder cooperation with Hong Kong's Kwai Tsing Port, expanding its global service network and building a more advanced shipping hub. At the same time, it will accelerate the development of rail-sea services such as the Chongqing-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Scheduled Rail-Sea Service and the Chongqing-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Scheduled Rail-Sea Service, creating mutual benefit for inland regions, YANTIAN and Kwai Tsing Port, contributing to the high-quality growth of China's marine economy and international trade.
YANTIAN's strong green foundations: Shaping a multi-dimensional low-carbon ecosystem
The successful launch of this partnership is underpinned by YANTIAN's long-term investment and deep expertise in green port development.
▶As a key shipping hub of the Greater Bay Area, YANTIAN has consistently advanced its green transformation:
🏆The world's only port to win the "Best Green Container Terminal" award four times.
📊China's largest single container terminal in shore-power capacity and berth coverage, contributing one quarter of the nation's total shore-power supply.
📉From 2014 to 2024, YANTIAN achieved true "growth without carbon emission increase": throughput rose by 25%, while carbon emissions per TEU fell by 32%.
♻️In H1 2025, both shore-power connections and total electricity supplied reached new highs, each posting 20%+ year-on-year growth after last year's rapid growth.
▶YANTIAN has built an inland service network of 27 inland ports and 34 rail-sea services, supported by 15 port alliances in the Greater Bay Area and 17 feeder services. Domestically, it seamlessly integrates with the national railway network and other domestic ports, covering the Greater Bay Area, Southwest, and Central China. Globally, it links with over 100 weekly shipping services worldwide, providing direct access to international markets.
▶Shenzhen–Hong Kong collaboration, connectivity across domestic and international markets, and three-region mutual benefit have taken solid shape as YANTIAN leverages a comprehensive multimodal system encompassing rail-sea and feeder services to build a green and efficient logistics corridor. Feeder throughput between YANTIAN and Kwai Tsing Port has continued to record positive year-on-year growth. Following last year's new high, laden container volumes rose a further 7% from January to October this year. YANTIAN is also accelerating the development of scheduled rail-sea services such as the Chengdu–Shenzhen–Hong Kong and Chongqing–Shenzhen–Hong Kong services. With direct rail access into the port working in tandem with efficient feeder operations to Hong Kong, YANTIAN is strengthening connectivity, enabling shared gains across inland regions, YANTIAN, and Kwai Tsing Port, and supporting the marine economy and the high-quality development of China's international trade.

YANTIAN will continue to expand its global shipping network, strengthening supply chain connectivity worldwide and building a higher-standard international shipping hub. The port will contribute to Shenzhen's drive to become a logistics centre with global influence, help consolidate and enhance Hong Kong's position as a leading international maritime hub, and jointly advance the Greater Bay Area's global competitiveness—all while supporting China's dual carbon goals and promoting the high-quality development of international trade.
