YICT's 16th container berth has passed an inspection by local port authorities. This latest addition, which commenced trial operations yesterday, is the final container berth of the Yantian Port Expansion Project.
Hutchison Port Holdings and Shenzhen Yantian Port Group signed an agreement in November of 2005 to jointly develop the Yantian Port Expansion Project. Covering an area of 136 hectares with a total quay length of 3,297 metres, the Expansion Project includes the construction of six container berths capable of accommodating 10,000-plus TEU mega-vessels. The whole project is due for completion by 2011.
To date, a total of 104 weekly shipping services call at YICT, including a significant number of international services. With the additional capacity, the terminal's handling capability during peak shipping seasons will be greatly improved to meet the needs of shippers in South China.
