YICT is pleased to announce the completion of a trial run of nine liquefied natural gas (LNG) container tractors. YICT is the first Chinese container terminal operator to have conducted such a test. On the "YICT Environment Day" launched today, nine LNG tractors were unveiled to the public for the first time.
According to in-house tests, compared to diesel-fuelled container tractors with the same horsepower, LNG tractors emit 82.2 percent less air pollution. Specifically, they emit 99.97 percent less CO, 30.95 percent less NOx, and no inhalable particulates.
Trucking companies have traditionally found it difficult to deploy LNG-fuelled tractors in ports due to the strain that container movement places on engines and the difficulty of ensuring a stable supply of LNG. YICT, in cooperation with CNOOC Gas and Power Group, Shenzhen Yantian Port Tonghui Investment, and the tractor manufacturer, has finally resolved these problems. YICT now has two newly installed LNG refueling stations.
Besides conducting this trial run, YICT has made other strides in implementing green technologies. For example, the company recently reconfigured 114 diesel rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGC) to run on an electric power grid. An eRTGC emits up to 95 percent less exhaust and over 50,000 fewer tons of CO2.
Commenting on both developments, Wai Yu Bong, Port Development Director of YICT, said, "Making good use of green energy helps to improve the energy consumption structure of an enterprise. We have a responsibility as a good corporate citizen to implement a long-term, sustainable environmental strategy that saves energy, reduces emissions, protects the marine environment, and builds a greener, healthier workplace."
