On 1 June 2009, the Yantian District Recycling Economic Development Fund granted a 200,000-yuan subsidy to YICT's hybrid rubber-tyred gantry crane (RTGC) project.
The development fund was established to encourage and subsidise enterprises which perform well in saving energy and use recycled energy. YICT was awarded the highest level of funding in this year's round of grants.
YICT's hybrid RTGC project aims to save energy and reduce emissions at the port through the conversion of standard cranes into hybrid cranes that run on a combination of stored power and diesel.
To date nine cranes have completed the reconfiguration process. These cranes are composed of three different hybrid technologies: a diesel plus flywheel energy storage solution, a diesel plus lithium-ion battery solution, and a diesel plus nickel metal hydride battery solution. The first of these technologies can reduce fuel use by 20 percent. The other two can reduce polluting emissions by 40 percent.
Separately, on 5 June, YICT was designated as one of Shenzhen's Advanced Waste Reduction Enterprises for 2008. This is the third year that YICT has earned this designation for its efforts to reduce the environmental cost of its operations and to apply green technologies.
