On 9 December 2008, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China (AQSIQ) officially named YICT as an International Sanitary Port. Liu Pingjun, AQSIQ Vice-Minister, and Chen Yingchun, Vice-Mayor of Shenzhen, cohosted a ceremony and gave speeches to mark the event.
The International Sanitary Port designation is the world's first that recognises seaport sanitation. Following technical evaluations conducted by experts from regional and national quality control bureaus, YICT passed an assessment of the World Health Organization in April, clearing the way for its definitive reception of the designation.
