In August, the Yantian District Government granted RMB200,000 worth of funding to YICT's rubber-tyred gantry crane (RTGC) reconfiguration project, which aims to replace the diesel engines of YICT's RTGCs with electric engines. The project is one of the first to be supported by the government in its drive to develop an environmentally friendly economy.
Once the reconfiguration project is complete, YICT's terminal operations will emit 99 percent less exhaust and 323 fewer tons of CO2 yearly. Terminal noise will also be reduced by 30 percent.
YICT attaches great importance to sustainable development, devoting itself to maintaining a high container throughput while preserving the local environment and marine ecosystem.
To date, YICT has put forth over 30 proposals to conserve energy, maintain air quality and monitor ballast water disposal. YICT is also pursuing solar energy applications and solid waste recycling. In addition, YICT has been working with the Port of Long Beach in California to enhance its environmental protection practices.
Successful conservation projects at YICT already save 5 million kWh of electricity and 3 million litres of diesel fuel yearly.
