On 6 May 2008, YICT was designated as an Advanced Waste Reduction Enterprise for 2007 by the Steering Committee of the Pengcheng Waste Reduction Programme, and was awarded a reward of RMB20,000. The programme, initiated by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, encourages Shenzhen enterprises to be more environmentally conscientious by reducing waste and emissions. YICT was the only terminal in Shenzhen that won such an honour.
Before granting the designation to YICT, the committee conducted technical evaluations of the terminal's waste-reduction efforts in 2007. These included upgrades to lighting used on rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGCs) to cut energy consumption as well as enhancements to RTGC slip lines and reductions to RTGC engine speeds to save fuel.
YICT also developed electronic administration and documentation systems to reduce paper consumption by 110,000 sheets annually. Furthermore, 2,500 kilogrammes of waste paper are collected monthly for recycling.
This is the second year that YICT has earned the Advanced Waste Reduction Enterprise designation, indicating the terminal's backing for environmental preservation is stronger than ever.
