On 27 April 2008, YICT became one of the first ports in mainland China to be named as an "International Sanitary Port" by the World Health Organization (WHO). To prepare for its application for this appraisal, YICT underwent technical evaluations conducted by experts from regional and state-level quality control bureaus. Following these evaluations, YICT passed an assessment carried out by WHO delegates.

In accordance with the International Health Regulations (2005), the WHO delegates conducted appraisals of vessel and public sanitation, drinking water supply, solid and liquid waste disposal, public health emergency response capabilities, infectious disease monitoring and control, first-aid facilities and vaccination facilities. The delegates came to the following conclusion: "Yantian Port possesses the core capacity required by the International Health Regulations (2005) and has reached the standards of an international healthy seaport."

With an increase in container throughput, YICT has become the most important container terminal in South China. The terminal has always incorporated the protection of the port area and the reduction of the effects of calling vessels on the environment into its operational processes. For instance, wastewater treatment facilities, such as a chemical treatment room and an oil-water separator, ensure that all water discharges are up to national standards. The port has also joined forces with the Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau to develop an automatic disinfection robot, which can thoroughly disinfect empty containers within one minute.

To ensure the security of vessels and the port, the Maritime Affairs Authority developed a risk analysis and monitoring system for vessels, which can analyse cargo declaration documents to provide early warning of dangerous container cargo, thus enabling a timely response to any potential security situation. In addition, the terminal is equipped with a medical emergency room, an infectious disease quarantine room and first-aid facilities that can respond immediately to public health emergencies.

As a key container terminal and a responsible corporate citizen, YICT is committed to implementing international health regulations. The International Healthy Seaport recognition helps sharpen Yantian Port's competitive edge and enhance its leading position in the industry.
