Through a series of energy-saving initiatives, YICT was able to reduce its electricity consumption by 19.9 percent per TEU in 2007, earning applause from organisations such as the Shenzhen Bureau of Trade and Industry. Moreover, YICT met the Shenzhen Municipal Government's requirement that key energy-consuming industries reduce their consumption by 15 percent per unit of output with a deadline set as of end-June 2007.
To improve YICT's energy efficiency, port staff members have introduced a scientific methodology for energy management in recent years. This has had a direct effect on energy efficiency.
YICT's consumption of electricity was reduced from 7.11kWh per TEU in 2004 to 5.93kWh per TEU in 2007. The company was able to improve energy efficiency even further by the end of the year, arriving at a savings of 19 percent.
YICT's recent energy-saving initiatives have included the reconfiguration of the power supply of rubber-tyred gantry cranes, the application of a power-control system for terminal lighting and the installation of solar panels. Moreover, 10 more energy-saving initiatives will be implemented within the year for an additional savings of 5 million kWh per year.
