On 10 June 2003, the first Traffic Assistant Brigade in the Special Economic Zone will report for duty. They will mount 24-hour patrols around Yantian Port to control traffic and maintain smooth traffic flow during the upcoming peak period of terminal operation and the summer tourist season.
With the support of the public and Yantian International Container Terminals (YICT), the Yantian District Traffic Police Brigade has taken this initiative to overcome the shortage of traffic police and strengthen traffic management in the Yantian area. The Brigade has recruited the first 20 traffic assistants who will be responsible for assisting traffic police in maintaining traffic flow at the main crossroads in and out of the port as well as in the area to the rear. They are also supposed to direct traffic and vehicles, monitor those areas where traffic accidents occur frequently, provide truck drivers with directions and guidelines, and serve the local residents as well.
The Yantian District Traffic Police Brigade and YICT have signed an "Agreement to Establish the Traffic Assistant Brigade". After one month's training, the assistants graduated today, with a good knowledge of basic road traffic management.
From now on, YICT and the Yantian District Traffic Police Brigade will maintain close co-operation on issues including information exchange, personnel arrangements and accidents, to guarantee smooth traffic flow for both container trucks and public traffic.
