Hamburg Süd Celebrates the Christening of a New Vessel at YICT

On 15 August 2012, Hamburg Süd celebrated the christening of the Santa Barbara at YICT. The ceremony was attended by approximately 300 guests including Stefan Christoph Gallon, Consul General of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Guangzhou; officials from the Transport Committee and port authorities of Shenzhen; Dr. Heino Schmidt, member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd; Eric Ip, Deputy Group Managing Director of Hutchison Port Holdings; Gerry Yim, CEO of Hutchison Port Holdings Trust and Patrick Lam, Managing Director of YICT.
The newly built Santa Barbara features a slot capacity of 7,100 TEU, with an overall length of 299.9 metres and a maximum draft of 13.5 metres. She will be deployed to Hamburg Süd's South American service which will be calling at YICT every Tuesday. The service will also call at Busan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Itapoá among other ports. Currently, Hamburg Süd has four shipping services calling at YICT, consisting of two Australian services, one South American service and one US service.
With the surge in trade and commerce between China and South America, South American shipping services have become a new area for growth. This year, YICT is reinforcing its strength in North American and European routes, and is, at the same time, striving to attract more services between China and South America. By the end of July, YICT had a total of 104 services calling at the port linking it to major destinations worldwide. This has enabled YICT to become the preferred gateway in South China for exporting cargo to the global market.
