YICT celebrated its 20th anniversary on 15 November 2013 with a special celebration ceremony held to mark the event. Joining the celebration were approximately 160 guests from various departments of the Shenzhen Municipality, port authorities, shipping lines, cargo companies and YICT shareholders.
Over the past two decades, YICT has evolved from a sleepy, deepwater harbour into one of the world’s busiest container terminals, thanks to continued support from shipping lines, cargo owners and various levels of government. Today, the terminal’s extensive service network linking it to major ports worldwide has allowed it to become an all-important trading gateway to southern China, serving about one-third the total import and export container traffic generated in Guangdong Province. When YICT was founded 20 years ago, it handled just 13,000 TEU a year. It is now one of the world’s most important maritime hubs, with annual throughput exceeding 10 million TEU. In January of this year, YICT reached a major milestone when it handled its 100 millionth TEU, achieving a world record in the process: no terminal in global container port history has achieved such a total so rapidly.
