On 3 February 2016, the 18,000-TEU CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin made its inaugural call at YICT. Measuring 399 metres long and 54 metres wide, it is able to accommodate 21 rows of containers on deck. The vessel is the largest in CMA CGM’s fleet and is the first ultra-large container vessel deployed on the liner’s US services. Moreover, it is the largest container vessel of this capacity which has called at the port on the west coast of the United States. The vessel operates on CMA CGM’s Pearl River Express (PRX). During the call at YICT, a total of 9,242 TEU were handled.
As a preferred port-of-call for mega-vessels in South China, YICT has attracted 40 shipping lines with about 100 weekly sailings, including approximately 30 US services. YICT is the last port-of-call for most of these American services.
