Recently, the Ministry of Transport and the National Development and Reform Commission jointly announced that 20 projects, including the "Yantian Port’s Asia-Pacific-Pan-Pearl River Delta-Europe International Multimodal Service Project", have been recognised as "National Multimodal Service Demonstration Project". Yantian Port is the only port in Shenzhen to receive this distinction.

Extend Port Functions to Customers' Doorsteps

Yantian Port’s Asia-Pacific-Pan-Pearl River Delta-Europe International Multimodal Service Project includes Phase I Expansion and Renovation of the Pingyan Railway Station, the new facilities of the modern railway yard in Pinghu South, and the information development project.

Pingyan Railway Station is the only on-dock freight rail station in Shenzhen Port, which is connected to the national railway network through the 23-kilometer-long dedicated railway--Pingyan Railway.

YANTIAN has built an advanced intermodal service network based on the facilities like Pingyan Railway Station and Pinghu South Station. It established six inland ports in Pinghu South, Changping, Ganzhou, Heyuan, Heshan and Liling, and launched 23 intermodal services, extending the port function to the vast economic hinterland.

Customers in Ganzhou and Pinghu South inland ports can enjoy the one-stop cargo declaration, inspection, and release services, which will also be launched in other inland ports in the future. The convenient container pickup and grounding procedures in each inland port extend the port functions to the inland ports. Data shows that the intermodal service network allows international trading enterprises in Mainland China to enjoy convenient services, saving 30% of logistics costs.

Pinghu South is the sixth inland port of YANTIAN, which is a key link to connect the railway of Shenzhen with the national railway network, further extending the functions of Yantian Port to the hinterland.

New Records of Intermodal Volume

YANTIAN launched its intermodal service in 1996 and is among the first in China to launch this service, with intermodal volume leading ports in China.

In 2021, under the support of governments and authorities at all levels, YANTIAN welcomed more services and further improved its operational efficiency by leveraging the "1+2+N" cooperation with China Railway Guangzhou. Pingyan Railway, capitalising on the advantages of inland ports, is able to help customers deliver cargo in a more efficient and safe manner.

Thanks to the close cooperation with China Railway Guangzhou, YANTIAN has set new records of intermodal services one after another. In 2021, the total volume of intermodal service reached 286,000 TEU, an increase of 34% year-on-year, fulfilling the target of 15% annual growth as required by the State Council's Action Plan for Carbon Dioxide Peaking Before 2030. On January 6, 2022, YANTIAN received the "Transportation Volume Contribution Award", "Customer Loyalty Award" and "Outstanding Container Rail Management Award" presented by China Railway Guangzhou.

Leverage Shenzhen Port as a National Logistics Hub

On November 29 last year, the National Development and Reform Commission released the list of the first national logistics hubs for the 14th “Five-Year Plan”, and the Port-based National Logistics Hub of Shenzhen, located in Yantian District, was on the list. YANTIAN will continue to improve port performance while upkeeping COVID-19 preventive measures to ensure the stability of the global supply chain and contribute to the economic development of the country.

Lawrence Shum, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports YANTIAN, said, “Yantian Port’s Asia-Pacific-Pan-Pearl River Delta-Europe International Multimodal Service Project is designed based on the industrial and economic development, infrastructure conditions, and advantages of the enterprises of Guangdong Province, which gives full play to the respective advantages of different modes of transport. It will substantially improve the overall efficiency of transportation services and contribute to the development of an international shipping hub. In the future, YANTIAN will leverage Shenzhen Port as a national logistics hub to give impetus to the development of the logistics cluster of the Pearl River Delta, which will further enhance the strategic position of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.”
