May 15th marks National Low Carbon Day. Embracing the theme "Green and Low Carbon, Beautiful China," YANTIAN is dedicated to green and sustainable development. By implementing green and low-carbon port development and focusing on energy conservation, YANTIAN takes concrete actions to protect the port’s clear blue skies and pristine waters.

New records of shore power supply

In April, YANTIAN set a new record for shore power utilisation. It provided shore power to over 100 vessels in a single month by supplying 2 million kWh of power. From January to April this year, the number of shore power connections at YANTIAN increased by 200% compared to the same period last year. As the pioneer in the large-scale deployments of shore power facilities among Chinese ports, YANTIAN has the largest shore power supply and the most covered berths of any container terminal in the country. In 2023, we achieved a historic high with a shore power supply of 12 million kWh, reducing carbon emissions by vessels by nearly 9,700 tons—equivalent to planting approximately 540,000 trees.

Introduction of new pure electric empty container stackers

The pure electric empty container stackers have outstanding advantages, including low energy consumption, zero emissions, improved stability, enhanced safety, and lower costs. By electrifying empty container operations, we can significantly reduce carbon emissions and accelerate the transition to a green and intelligent port. Compared to previously used oil-powered equipment, these electric stackers reduce carbon emissions by 51%. YANTIAN proactively adopts clean energy for mobile machinery, contributing to a greener Shenzhen.

Over the past decade (2014-2023), our annual throughput increased by 24%, while carbon emissions per container decreased by 33%.

In addition to shore power facilities, YANTIAN has made significant efforts to upgrade port machinery with green, low-carbon, and environmentally friendly technologies.
○ In 2007, YANTIAN initiated the project to apply eRTGCs. It is the first port in China to widely apply eRTGCs and is one of the ports with the most electrically driven RTGCs. Currently, there are 216 eRTGCs. After converting from diesel to electric power, each crane reduces exhaust emissions by 95% per lift.

○ In 2010, YANTIAN began to apply LNG-powered tractors, becoming the first port in China to adopt such tractors on a large scale. At its peak, LNG tractors made up 60% of the internal tractors fleet. Currently, the port is exploring the use of battery-powered electric tractors to replace traditional diesel and LNG-fuelled tractors, aiming for near-zero carbon emissions. Additionally, the port is equipped with 226 electric vehicle charging piles, and forklifts have been fully electrified. Nearly 50% of the vehicles used within the port are electric.

Looking ahead, YANTIAN will continue to enhance digitisation, intelligence, and sustainability of the port. By embracing new productive forces, it aims to build a higher-level international shipping hub and make ongoing contributions to the development of a green port and the preservation of clear waters and blue skies.
