On February 10, a delegation headed by Tang Shouquan, Chairperson of the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau, visited YANTIAN. YANTIAN extended our appreciation for the enduring support provided by the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau. The two sides delved into comprehensive discussions regarding future collaboration and the advancement of green energy applications, collectively envisioning a promising blueprint for the synergistic development of eco-friendly ports and intelligent power grids.

Remarkable progress in green transformation, establishing an industry benchmark

YANTIAN presented our recent electricity consumption data to the Power Supply Bureau, highlighting our initiatives and accomplishments in energy conservation, emission reduction, and the utilisation of green energy. As a globally renowned container terminal, YANTIAN has steadfastly embraced the ethos of green development. Through the optimisation of our energy framework, the promotion of renewable energy sources, and the adoption of smart energy management systems, we have achieved a notable decrease in energy usage and carbon emissions, thereby establishing a benchmark for the green transformation of the port sector.

A green showcase of shore power

During the presentation, YANTIAN showcased the remarkable development and operational milestones of our shore power system. The annual emission reduction statistics are truly impressive. In 2024, YANTIAN witnessed an 83% surge in the number of vessels connected to shore power and a 101% increase in power supply compared to the previous year, both setting unprecedented records. These impressive figures represent roughly a quarter of the nation's total shore power supply, leading to a reduction of approximately 19,322 tons of vessel carbon emissions. This is tantamount to the environmental benefit of planting about 1.07 million trees. Furthermore, through a series of eco-friendly measures, we achieved a notable 32% decrease in carbon emissions per container in 2024 over the past decade.

The shore to ship power system stands as a cornerstone in YANTIAN's green port development. Pioneering the extensive use of shore power as early as 2015, YANTIAN has since emerged as the leader in shore power supply in China and the container terminal with the most extensive berth coverage. By supplying clean electricity to berthed vessels, we have significantly reduced carbon emissions and noise pollution during their berth.

YANTIAN holds the unique distinction of being the only terminal globally to have been honoured with the "Best Green Container Terminal" award four times. With ambitions to fully implement shore power facilities by 2025, we remain steadfast in our commitment to "fostering a green port and safeguarding clean waters and blue skies."

Pennant of gratitude: a symbol of appreciation for steadfast power support

Amidst the visit, Lawrence Shum, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports YANTIAN, presented a pennant of gratitude to the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau on behalf of the company. This act was a heartfelt appreciation for Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau's enduring support in securing a reliable power supply for YANTIAN. As a significant consumer of electricity, the uninterrupted operation of YANTIAN is deeply indebted to the Power Supply Bureau's efficient services and steadfast assurances. Particularly during the port's peak electricity demand periods and major events, the bureau always safeguards the safety and consistency of YANTIAN's power supply.

Strengthening partnerships: cultivating innovative new quality productive forces

The two parties also delved into comprehensive discussions about future collaboration. YANTIAN articulated our dedication to further amplify the utilisation of green energy, refine our electricity usage framework, and foster the profound integration of smart grids with advanced port operations. Representatives from the Power Supply Bureau emphasised their unwavering support for YANTIAN's business expansion, with a special focus on the East Port development and forthcoming green transformation requirements. They are committed to delivering more streamlined and intelligent power services, working with YANTIAN to boost the green port development in Shenzhen and the fulfilment of the "dual carbon" goals.

This visit has served to further consolidate the collaborative ties between YANTIAN and the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau. In the times ahead, both parties will leverage their partnership in green energy to jointly propel the harmonious evolution of the port and the power grid. This endeavour will play a pivotal role in Shenzhen's quest to emerge as a global marine centre and a trailblazer in sustainable urban development.

YANTIAN will always keep green development in mind and closely work with the Power Supply Bureau to script an innovative narrative for green ports and intelligent energy solutions.
