On 4 July 2008, the Second Access Road to Yantian was opened to traffic after its three year construction. The new road provides an alternative route for passenger traffic between downtown Shenzhen and Yantian District. Via this toll-free expressway, it takes only 15 minutes or so to reach the Dameisha and Xiaomeisha beaches and the OCT East resort located east of Yantian.
Before the opening of the new road, Shenyan Road had been the only link between downtown Shenzhen and Yantian for many years. However, with the development of Yantian Port and the growing number of container trucks moving in and out of the port area, Shenyan Road could barely cope with the growing traffic. Thus, in 2004, the Shenzhen Municipal Government decided to build the Second Access Road to Yantian and to incorporate the widening of the Yangang section of Shenyan Road into the said project. With the coming peak season, the new expressway will help substantially minimise the cross-over effect that could occur between container trucks and passenger traffic and thus benefit them both.
The Second Access Road to Yantian starts four kilometres from Luosha Road, east of the Luofang Interchange, and ends at the road section where Yantian Port and Yanba Highway meet. With a total investment of 2.764 billion RMB, the expressway is designed for speeds of up to 80 kph and has three lanes of traffic in either direction, a total length of 11.392 kilometres and a daily road traffic capacity of 100,000 passenger car units.
There are also two other substantial parts of the project: the Wutongshan Interchange is scheduled to be completed in December this year, while the widening of the Yangang section of Shenyan Road is to be completed by the end of next year.
