On 7 November 2007, China's Ministry of Commerce and the China Association of Foreign-Invested Enterprises designated YICT as an "National Excellent Taxpaying, Import & Export Performance Enterprise with Foreign Investment" for 2006. The terminal operator is one of only two Shenzhen companies to be awarded this distinction this year.
The award is given to foreign-invested enterprises that have shown superior economic performance. YICT had already received the award for 2004 and 2005, but had to meet even more stringent requirements to qualify for 2006.
According to the new rules, YICT had to demonstrate an annual turnover of RMB300 million, and an annual import-export volume of US$500 million with a year-on-year increase of 10 per cent – conditions that the terminal operator had no trouble meeting.
In 2006, YICT handled 8.865 million TEU, supported by double-digit annual growth. This equalled an average daily turnover of 25,000 TEU. To cope with South China's ever-greater import and export demands, YICT is striving to build new berths, purchase new equipment, improve operational efficiency and facilitate customs clearance.
