May 17 is the "World Telecommunication Day", and YANTIAN also ushered in new achievements in developing the "5G+ smart port". Together with China Telecom and ZTE, YANTIAN becomes the first port in South China to equip its remote-controlled RTGCs with 5G devices, making the port more automated, digital, and intelligent.
New achievements in 5G+ smart port innovation
The 5G network is verified to be stable during the 24/7 remote control test of the RTGCs of YANTIAN with an average end-to-end latency less than 20 ms and a network packet loss rate less than 0.0001%. All of its indicators meet the communication requirements of the remote-controlled RTGCs, especially in low latency and high reliability, leading the industry in 5G application.
Continue to build a smart and green container hub port
As a pioneer in port automation, YANTIAN has been committed to using technology to improve productivity since its establishment, and has developed many intelligent systems. For example, the award-winning Multi-vessel Optimisation system, which uses AI to quickly analyze and optimise quay crane operation plans, predict and eliminate conflicts in yard operations, and optimise resource allocation and utilisation during multi-vessel calls, has been highly appreciated by our customers. In 2019, YANTIAN started to launch remote control and a series of smart loading and unloading equipment such as automated quay cranes and RTGCss, which not only significantly improved the operational efficiency, but also enhanced the operational safety and the working environment of employees.
In order to promote the port digitalisation, since 2020, YANTIAN, China Telecom and ZTE have jointly explored the 5G application in smart port development. The three parties have adopted the 5G precise cloud network dedicated for the port industry to build the digital base and platform for YANTIAN smart port, which provides key atomic capabilities such as 5G, cloud computing, and AI, and incubates innovative products and solutions such as 5G VPN, 5G dual-link, and service anomaly analysis based on business needs of the port, greatly enhancing the resilience of 5G links by covering the port area with 5G core networks to meet the latency requirements and ensure that user data will not leave the port area. Meanwhile, with the strong support from port supervisory authorities, YANTIAN has launch 5G-based ship telemetry quarantine system and 5G ship-side access control, using the most advanced technology to optimise epidemic prevention measures and port efficiency.
Support the development of Shenzhen as a port-based national logistics hub
As a major part in Shenzhen, YANTIAN has 20 large deep-water container berths and is the largest container terminal in the world run by a single terminal operator in terms of throughput. At present, all mega-vessels coming to the Greater Bay Area will call at Yantian Port. Mega-vessels have high standards when it comes to the loading and unloading capacity and efficiency of the port of call, as well as the water depth. Yantian Port has excellent facilities and natural geographical advantages. With a channel nearly 18 meters deep and 475 meters wide, it allows all-weather, two-way navigation for 200,000-ton vessels.
Lawrence Shum, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports YANTIAN, said, "YANTIAN has long been promoting the smart and green port development. We have launched the automated terminal project in the East Port of YANTIAN at the end of 2021, and we will then drive the transformation and upgrading of the Phases 1,2,3 & Expansion and the West Port to promote the integrated development of the East, Central and West Port for resource sharing and efficiency improvement. Looking ahead, we will continue to work together with industry leaders such as China Telecom and ZTE to build a greener, smarter and safer world-class smart port with ICTs such as mobile communication, the Internet, cloud computing, big data, internet of things, and intelligent control."
